🗽America at 250: Tall Ships, Aircraft, and History Along the Hudson🎆

For America’s 250th birthday on July 4, 2026, New York Harbor hosted a remarkable celebration of independence. Tall ships and naval vessels from around the world sailed into the harbor, saluting the Statue of Liberty and honoring the ideals of freedom, hope, and opportunity.

I had planned to travel to Governors Island for the viewing, but the long commute changed my plans. Instead, I watched the celebration closer to home near the West Harlem Piers—and it proved an excellent choice. From the Hudson River, I saw tall ships representing countries including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and many others.

The International Aerial Review made the day even more memorable. Aircraft flew above the Hudson in dramatic formations, including the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, Air Force Thunderbirds, F-35s, Coast Guard aircraft, aerial refueling planes, and historic bombers.

I also visited the New York Public Library to view the Declaration of Independence, adding an important historical dimension to the celebration.

As America marks 250 years, we must also remember that African Americans have defended and helped build this nation since its founding. Honoring those stories is essential—not only to preserve the past, but to understand the full and complicated American story.
